Be Your Own Marketing Manager: Develop a Personal 30 Second Commercial

A smooth, conversational 30 Second Commercial about who you are and what your do is vital in your career. Your pitch should be brief, only about 30-60 seconds long. It is imperative as you develop and solidify your pitch that is sounds conversational and not “salesy” or mechanical. The goal is for it to be short and snappy and but to have enough information about your company and what you do to draw in the listener

Remember your audience. You want your listener to be intrigued by the opportunity to learn more about you and what you do. What’s in it for them? Listen to yourself. Would you be interested in you?

When creating your personal commercial, remember the following components. You want your listener, after half a minute, to want to learn more about you and what you do.

Who are you? Break the ice. Who are you and what is the name of your company?

What do you offer? Think of the big picture: do you help clients save time? Money? Remember your audience and what is it about your product that is important to them.

What problem do you solve? Move beyond just rattling off your features. Use this as an opportunity to share your value.

What makes you different? Again, step back and remember the listener. Stay away from the complexities of the product or service and focus on why your solution would help your client more than your competitor’s.

Ask a question: By asking a question, your Commercial becomes conversational. It draws your lead in and creates an opportunity for you to position your product.

Create a call to action: How can the listener contact you? Create an opportunity for follow-up.

Remember, with your 30 Second Commercial, practice makes perfect. You want to feel natural and comfortable interjecting it when you are meeting new people. The more you practice and make it conversational, the more comfortable you will feel using it. Do not just memorize a script- you will sound like a robot and it will completely defeat the purpose. Make it yours. Use words you would speak. The goal is to be able to comfortably transition to a conversation about what you do when the situation arises.
